record-breaking poet
âTake these simple words and create something that touches you.â
Through her poems on the themes of trauma and healing, love and femininity, Rupi touches the lives of many young women around the world.
Rupi was born in Punjab, North India, and migrated to Canada at the age of four with her family. As she couldnât speak English, her mother encouraged her to draw and paint, which became her first passions.
Rupi started writing poetry for friends at school before performing her work on stage at the age of seventeen. She was inspired by writers like Khalil Gibran, who created powerful imagery using simple words. Rupi began to post her work on Instagram, where her mixture of poetry and hand-drawn illustrations attracted a large following. However, when she tried to publish her poems in a book, a university professor discouraged her, telling her that no one buys poetry books, especially those written by Indian women.
Undeterred, she decided to self-publish her first book, Milk and Honey, in 2014. A few months later, Rupi posted an image of herself in period-stained pyjamas on Instagram for a university assignment. Though periods are perfectly natural, the picture was removed by Instagram moderators for being offensive. Bitterly disappointed, Rupi campaigned to have the photo reposted, gaining global attention.
After this controversy, Rupiâs book was quickly picked up by a publisher who was impressed with her thought-provoking messages.
Milk and Honey soon became a smash hit. It topped The New York Times Best Seller list for over a year, sold over 5 million copies and has been translated into more than 45 languages!
Rupi followed up on this success with a second collection of poetry, The Sun and Her Flowers, and continues to inspire millions.
